Time Mag Cover: "How Al Gore Could Save The Democrats"

With Democrats beginning to voice fears about a long summer of two candidates sniping over electability, the name of unofficial party elder Al Gore has resurfaced. Gore was tossed around early and often as a potential nominee, complete with his own grass roots recruiting party. However, the former Vice President and Nobel laureate assiduously avoided exhortations to run.

Nevertheless, the Gore question is coming back. Joe Klein is the latest to make the case for Al Gore coming into the Democratic race in the case of a brokered convention:

"Let's say the elders of the Democratic Party decide, when the primaries end, that neither Obama nor Clinton is viable. ... All they'd have to do would be to convince a significant fraction of their superdelegate friends, maybe fewer than 100, to announce that they were taking a pass on the first ballot at the Denver convention, which would deny the 2,025 votes necessary to Obama or Clinton. What if they then approached Gore and asked him to be the nominee, for the good of the party-and suggested that he take Obama as his running mate? ... A prominent fund raiser told me, 'Gore-Obama is the ticket a lot of people wanted in the first place.'"

Meanwhile, Jason Horowitz this week tried to outline the timing of a Gore endorsement:

"If Gore were to weigh in, he would have to do so before the superdelegates begin breaking for either Obama or Clinton," said a former Gore adviser, after laying out the various scenarios that might prompt the former vice president to get involved. "The superdelegates constitute the last true contest in this race. And for many, Gore is someone they talk to, listen to, and whom a lot of them admire and respect. Having him make a closing argument for either candidate would carry significant weight with some of these last-man-standing voters."

India can show the way, says Al Gore

‘It can develop technologies to combat climate change’

NEW DELHI: India could lead the world in renewable energy technologies as part of a solution to the climate change crisis, said the former United States Vice-President, Al Gore.
India had proven its capability in information technology, pharma and other sophisticated sectors, and could be a leader in developing new energy technologies to combat climate change, the Nobel Peace Prize winner said.
Mr. Gore was speaking at a function to mark the launch of the India chapter of ‘The Climate Project’ here on Saturday.
“Fast-developing countries like India have a right to aspire for higher standards of living and set whatever goals they think are appropriate.”
Mr. Gore said this to a question on the differences between the developed and developing countries on greenhouse gas emission cuts. “India itself is vulnerable to effects of climate change and can be a part of the solution.”
Mr. Gore, who is championing the cause of combating climate change, said the U.S. was the largest source of pollution and most responsible for creating the problem, and that there was need for a change in the U.S. policy on climate. Whoever comes to the White House after the presidential polls would have to take necessary steps.
Asked whether economic recession fears and paucity of time before the December 2009 climate meet would push aside climate change issues from the agenda of the new U.S. President, Mr. Gore said they were working on building a “groundswell of public opinion” to ensure that the U.S. took a position of leadership on climate change in the Copenhagen conference. The 2009 climate meet aims at concluding a comprehensive new global climate treaty to replace the Kyoto Protocol by 2013.

What If There is No Back Room?
The search for a way out of the Democrats' dilemma.
Mar 7, 2008 | Updated: 11:56  a.m. ET Mar 7, 2008

Excerpt: "If there's a stalemate, the superdelegates could decide to pass on the first ballot to test the candidates' strength at that juncture. We could then be way back to the future, the first time in the modern reform age that a candidate is not chosen on the first ballot.

If that happens, the convention could turn to a compromise candidate. Al Gore is the most obvious and perhaps the only contender who could head off a complete meltdown in the party. After all, he already won the popular vote for the presidency. It was only because of a fluke at the Supreme Court that he was denied his turn at the wheel. No one could deny that he's ready on day one to assume the presidency. "It's the rational choice if this turns into a goddamn mess, which it could," says the Clinton adviser, who doesn't want to be quoted seeming to waver about Clinton's chances of securing the nomination.

Gore has kept his silence throughout the Democratic nominating season. But his name will surely surface as his party ponders the possibility that they will not have a nominee by the time the convention rolls around—especially since John McCain enjoys a huge head start in launching his general-election campaign."
